Oracle DBA Certification
Chapter 7 - Tuning and Performance
Conclusion
-
Read Don Burleson’s book on the STATSPACK utility. Read it, study it
and you will become a STATSPACK expert.
-
Identify the scope of the performance problem
before you attempt to tune it.
-
Keep an open mind. Do not let tunnel vision
prevent you from evaluating all of the possible reasons for the poor
performance.
-
Start by monitoring the database at a high
level and then continue to narrow the scope of your monitoring until
you pinpoint the problem.
-
Be careful with the analyze utility. Analyzing
tables will most likely change query access paths.
-
Don't use hints unless it is absolutely
necessary. You are altering SQL to influence the optimizer. This may
have a negative impact when the data, application or database
release changes.
Now that we have covered the basics of backup
and recovery and tuning and performance, let’s move on to something
new. Instead of focusing on a single topic, the next chapter
contains information, hints, tips, tricks and techniques that are
not related to any specific Oracle discipline.
