Paying
Severance
Providing compensation greater than what is owed
the employee at the time of termination may be just that little extra
touch that the fired employee needs to believe they were fairly
released. In addition, they would presumably be less disgruntled and
less likely to file a wrongful discharge lawsuit.
Being terminated is not a pleasant experience for
most employees, even when the individual accepts his or her
responsibility for the final outcome. Any major life-changes for
individuals are serious sources of stress, and threatened financial
self-sufficiency as the result of being fired is right near the top of
the priority list.
Severance will assist with the transition period
following termination of employment and may take the form of monetary
lump sums or extended benefits such as insurance and dental coverage.
