Side Business on Company
Business Time – Case 1
Many years ago, the team leader for a group of
database administrators managed the work assignments for the team and
had to track the progress of their tasks. One of the DBAs consistently
had difficulty completing her work by the target dates. The team
manager wondered what the issue might be until he started to notice
some extracurricular activity in the workplace.
There were excessive phone calls being made and
received by this person. She would disappear for hours at a time
during the day. The manager would head out to visit some of the IT
customers or go to a seminar and run into this person in the parking
lot coming in or going out at odd times during the day.
The team manager subsequently discovered, from
someone who interfaced with this employee outside of work, that she
was running her own database administration consulting business from
the company facilities. She was fired immediately for this
unacceptable use of company facilities, systems, and instruments.
