E-mail Scams for Identity Theft
Many e-mail scams will contain a link saying
something like “click here to be removed from our list”. Don’t do
it! Most of them result in more e-mail since they have confirmed
that someone is reading that particular e-mail account.
For a look at the many various types of e-mail
scams, please refer to the previous chapter, Internet Scams.
The next section provides information on more ways a thief can
access an individual’s personal information.
Web Searches for Identity Theft
Back in the days when UseNet was the bastion of
academia and harmless people, web users were far more open about
themselves. Old UseNet postings are commonly used by identity
thieves, especially those that were posted in the mid 1990’s.
The following is an example UseNet group
posting that could be used to steal identity:
Hi Marge,
Yes, Jack and I are very excited about our new
addition. We named him John Jacob Astor after his Dad and he was
born on the same day, March 25 of this year, exactly 25 years after
Dad’s birthday!
