Web Stalkers
Chapter 8 -
Identity Theft
Web Searches for Identity Theft
Back in the mid 1990’s nobody envisioned that
the UseNet newsgroups would be made available for instant worldwide
search. A web thief can combine Google Groups (UseNet) searches
with Wayback Machine (www.archive.org) searches, and it is amazing
how much can be revealed about a person. The Wayback Machine is
especially useful for finding out about people since comments made
in a forum back in 1999 can now be quickly resurrected. The Wayback
Machine has complete archives of forums and they can be read today
just as they existed back in 1999.
One can dig up details about people’s
interests, hobbies and family members with astonishing ease. Many
web crooks use these techniques to impersonate an old friend:
Hi Jack,
It’s been such a long time! I remember that
good old days when we raced our 56 Chevy’s down on Colorado
Boulevard and I’ll always remember that time that Cindy got mad at
you about the prom.
I’ve been meaning to stop-over for a visit and
catch up! I lost track of you when you moved from Burbank, and I’d
love to see you again. Send me your contact info, and let’s get
together!

fake websites can be used to steal an individual’s identity.
