Chapter 8 -
Identity Theft
Preventing Identity Theft
-
Avoid carrying unneeded credit cards on a daily
basis. This makes a lost or stolen wallet less trouble when
contacting creditors to report the loss and obtaining new cards and
account numbers.
-
Make a photocopy of both sides of everything in
a wallet or purse. Include driver’s license, credit and debit
cards, health and automobile insurance cards. Libraries, grocery
stores or copy centers all have copy machines available for public
use for a small fee. Keep this copy somewhere safe, other than the
wallet or purse, like a file at home.
-
Be careful about giving information over the
phone or Internet. If the call was received rather than initiated,
be especially wary of a request for a credit card number or other
personal information even if there is a special limited time offer
for a desired product. This is a common ploy by identity thieves
and is very dangerous.
-
Request to not receive the pre-screened credit
card offers through the mail by calling 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-
8688). They require the cardholder’s Social Security Number so the
account can be flagged. Even if someone opts out, some offers may
still be sent because some credit grantors use other sources than
the credit bureaus for their lists. Reducing these offers in the
mail reduces the chance that someone else could steal them and
accept the cards in place of the intended recipient.
Recognizing Identity Theft
There are many ways to find out if one’s
identity has been stolen. The following list is a compilation from
several credit card companies, credit-reporting agencies, and the
Federal Trade Commission:
An individual might get bills for a credit card
account they never opened.
