Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
The Search for Self
How secure is personal information? As part of
a privacy self-assessment, it is helpful for an Internet user to
perform a couple of Internet searches using their own name as the
text to locate. Most people are surprised at the volume of
information they find.
Unfortunately, once personal information is out
there, there is no getting it back. The record cannot be expunged.
The only recourse is to change the information so that what is
available is no longer accurate. For example, get a new phone
number, keep it unlisted and do not give it out. Start using a new
e-mail address. Internet service providers are very good at setting
up new addresses; it is simple, does not take a lot of time and it
is free. Choose an address that is non-descriptive, includes
nothing traceable such as a real name and does not invite unwanted
attention.
Analyze Passwords
The
easiest way for a hacker to gain unauthorized access to an account
is to figure out the password. Therefore, choosing a password that
provides a high level of security is of the utmost importance.
