Conclusion
This chapter has introduced the crime of
identity theft. Hopefully the information here will help increase
awareness of the many ways that criminals can collect and use an
individual’s information. Some ways are high-tech and others are
low-tech. Throughout this chapter, a number of suggestions on how
one can protect oneself against some of these attacks.
Criminals can steal an identity in a variety of
ways. Some suggestions for making their job harder and reducing the
risks of identity theft are:

Buy a crosscut shredder.

Use a shredder before discarding anything with
personal information, especially credit card and bank statements.

Closely review credit card and bank statements.

Closely review credit reports on a regular
basis.

Identity theft is a crime that causes pain to
its victims. Not physical pain but mental anguish. The Identity
Theft Resource Center concluded that victims of identity theft spend
an average of 600 hours recovering from this crime, sometimes over a
period of years. Many resources for victims of identity theft are
