Chapter 9 - Self Protection on the Web
Online Security
Measures
The proliferation of portable computer and
wireless technologies has increased the challenge of the individual
to protect themselves from cybercrimes. The freedom afforded by the
new wireless systems can lull users into a false sense of security.
The good news is that there are measures that anyone can take to
protect their wireless systems from criminals; however, forgetting
to also protect one’s hardwired system at home or work could be a
large mistake.
The two high school students were out for a
drive. This was not just any drive; they were not headed for a
party or the mall. Their goal was to see how many wireless networks
they could access. They had a laptop with a wireless card and a
couple of freely available programs that would help them identify
and access any wireless cards they happened across.
Taking turns driving, they discovered several
of their neighbors had wireless networks with no protection in
place. They also found businesses with wireless networks that gave
them full access to corporate systems with confidential data. Even
most of the networks they found that were protected fell quickly to
the software they were using.
The Appeal of
Wireless
The beauty of the wireless network is that it
is just as the name implies: wireless. It is not hard to imagine
that it is a simple matter to sell anyone on the benefit of a system
that provides all of the services of the old desktop PC without all
the bothersome wires. Wireless networks are now available at many
electronic and computer stores for fairly reasonable prices. As the
costs drop, the use of wireless is becoming more common. Many
people who are buying equipment to setup a wireless network do not
have enough knowledge to implement adequate security.
