Chapter 9 - Self Protection on the Web
Hardware Firewalls
A hardware firewall is a separate piece of
equipment. This type of firewall is sometimes integrated into a
wireless hub or access point. Other times it is a self-contained
unit, much like a DSL or cable modem. It will generally be
installed between the DSL or cable modem and the computer, hub, or
wireless gateway.
Technically adept folks can use an older
computer and install a second network card and free software to
create a robust firewall. One of the advantages of hardware
firewalls is that one can be properly positioned to protect multiple
computers. This can be advantageous for a home user with more than
one computer.
A downside to hardware firewalls is that there
is a new piece of computer equipment for the user to deal with.
That means another product competing for an electrical connection in
the already crowded computer area.
Software Firewalls
A software firewall is simply a program that
runs on a computer that performs the same functions as a hardware
firewall. It takes advantage of the computer’s ability to do more
than one job at a time. This is called multi-tasking. The software
firewall process causes the computer to work more than it is usually
required to as it simply keeps up with the human’s limited
requirements.
