Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Safely Purchasing Online
Regardless of how a person arrives at any online shopping
or retailer website, the challenge remains; how can the site be
evaluated for trustworthiness? One way not to evaluate a
website is by its appearance. A neat and professional looking
website is not extraordinarily difficult to create, and it is well
worth the effort for criminals if it means bigger returns.
To assist in the evaluation of sources such as
web pages, Alastair
Smith has compiled a list of links. This list is available at
www.vuw.ac.nz/staff/alastair_smith/evaln/evaln.htm.
Use the following criteria when evaluating web
pages:
Accuracy - After an initial review, is
there anything on the web page that is not accurate? If the company
recently changed their phone number and did not update their web
page with the new information, will the web page be updated when
product availability or a price change occurs?
Authority - If the web page proposes a
solution to a problem, verify that the author is qualified to make
that suggestion. Receiving advice on motorcycle maintenance from a
cooking expert will undoubtedly ensure the motorcycle will never be
the same again.
Objectivity - When looking at the web page for a news media
outlet (newspaper, television, radio), many people expect unbiased
reporting. Consider the source of the information and
make sure to determine opinions from facts.
