Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Comparison Shopping
Figure 1.8 shows the results of a search for a particular
digital camera. Notice that the item is sorted by total price,
which includes tax and shipping charges. The lowest price without
these charges is from a different e-tailer; but for this search,
shipping to this particular California zip code would make it only
the second best choice.
The top two choices have over 2,000 customer
reviews. All four e-tailers listed have a rating of 4 out of 5 or
better. Although the price difference is small, this example
illustrates the methodology of the search.

Consumer Reports is an independent, nonprofit
organization that rates products, consumer organizations, etc. They
tested a number of shopping sites and awarded top marks to
BizRate.com and Shopping.com. Still other well-known
shopping websites to try include mySimon.com,
PriceGrabber.com and PriceSCAN.com. These sites also
provide a list of e-tailers that offer the product a consumer may be
looking for. From there, it is up to the consumer to determine what
level of trust to place in a particular company.
Whether surfing the web or conducting online
shopping, a user visits many sites and consequently creates a
pattern of habits. The next section will explain how this pattern
is tracked.
