Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Vulnerability Analysis
Until a person realizes just how vulnerable
their personal information actually is, they may lack the motivation
necessary to take the steps to protect themselves. There are a
couple of websites designed to help a person realize just that.
Privacy.Net (www.privacy.net/analyze) and Anonymizer (www.anonymizer.com/privacytest)
provide free evaluations that determine just how much a user’s
information might be available to websites visited.
Much of the information that can be gathered is
often technical. This includes things such as the IP address, the
browser version and the operating system being used. This may seem
unimportant to most people, but a hacker can look at that
information and find a security flaw that has not been patched,
which can then lead to a compromised system.
Methods to Maintain Privacy
This section introduces products that help
maintain privacy. There is no right answer for everyone, so
security conscious people need to evaluate the various programs
available to find the options that best suit their needs.
