Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Dumping a Computer
If making use of a company to dispose of a retired
machine, be sure to research exactly how it will be done.
Investigate the security and privacy policies in place. Be sure to
learn how the company safeguards information that may continue to
reside on the system when they receive it, and how the machine is
destroyed. Keep in mind that the disposal of certain computer
components involves the handling of hazardous materials and must be
done in a precise fashion in order to comply with current safety
regulations. It may also be helpful to consult with local computer
technicians and retailers to learn how they handle the disposal of
old machines.
Many non-profit organizations benefit from
donations of computers. Often, they prefer working machines with a
minimum system requirement available upon request. Links found at
www.justgive.org/html/ways/ways7.html#2 may be helpful. Be
sure to do research before donating equipment to any organization.
Inside Al-Qaeda’s Hard Drive
Alan Cullison is a reporter for the Atlantic
Monthly. While on assignment in the Middle East his laptop failed,
so he purchased a couple of used machines as replacements that later
turned out to have belonged to Al-Qaeda members. These machines
contained information that was shown to include e-mail messages from
Osama bin-Laden. The owners of these machines did not realize they
were leaving an information trail on their old laptops.
